EDGE Winter Retreat

January 12 @ 5:00 pm - January 15 @ 5:00 pm

COST: $250

****$50 deposit due 12/13/23****

WE ARE HEADING OUT TO SKI!!! This is one of our favorite student events and it’s an extra day longer this year!

This year we are going to have a tiered cost system that will be set up as follows:

      • Skiing + Renting Bib & Jacket – $250
      • Skiing (renting Bib OR Jacket) – $235
      • Skiing (no rental) – $225
      • Not Skiing – $115

Please make sure your student understands that once we have arrived at Lake Junaluska it will be too late to change their mind. The decision they have made prior to leaving will be what they have to follow through with.

As always scholarship money will be available if needed. Please reach out to Chris for information on that.

FAQ

  • What is the purpose of this trip?

This will be a unique blend of a weekend retreat and a ski trip. I want to emphasize that this trip has a spiritual emphasis. There will be three teaching/worship sessions. This will be an excellent opportunity for our students to build community and be challenged in their faith.

  • What is different this year?

We have moved the date to MLK weekend so as to not interfere with the Christmas holidays and to increase the number of adult volunteers who are able to attend with us. We also will be staying an additional day which is why you have seen an increase in price. Rather than have one group skiing and the other go to Asheville this year students will have an opportunity to do both. We will all either ski or stay on campus on Saturday, and on Sunday afternoon we will go to Asheville as a dat trip. This day trip will likely involve shopping, and walking around Asheville. Students will be responsible for whatever money they wish to spend on the day trip.

  • What if my teenager does not know how to ski?

Part of our package includes a FREE ski lesson on Saturday morning. This will be mandatory for everyone who has never skied.

  • What should my teenager wear to ski?

This is what is recommended: the bottom layer should be light and should absorb moisture (polypropylene, longjohns, tights, etc…), the next layer can be a t-shirt or long-sleeved shirt with a sweatshirt or fleece pullover covering it. A windbreaker jacket is recommended. As for pants, long pants (not jeans) are recommended. Your students should bring sunglasses to protect their eyes from the sun’s reflection on the snow. Only wear one pair of socks. Waterproof gloves are also recommended. The most important item is a wool hat of some sort. If you rent a ski bib and a ski jacket then you can wear a light layer under that.

Ski Bib and jacket rentals are available, they have been reserved in advance. Make sure to fill out the rental agreement paperwork.

  • Is skiing the only option?

No, but it will look different this year. There won’t be an offsite alternative activity. The students who choose not to ski will stay on site at Lake Junaluska and will have access to the activities there (walking trail, mini-golf, tennis, pickleball, fishing, or just hanging out). We will take a group trip to Asheville on the following day.

  • Where will the group be staying:

We will stay at the Lake Junaluska Conference & Retreat Center in Lake Junaluska, NC. This retreat center is located about 10 miles from Cataloochee Ski Area. More information can be found by visiting: lakejunaluska.com
